 THE MOSAIC IN PENCILS
The 14′ x 6′ mosaic consists of 12,000 colored pencils, arranged in patterns that appear to be reaching out towards the viewer. To create the piece, the designers sectioned the installation off into parts, and meticulously organized the colors based off of a detailed plan. The pixelated rainbow uses 25 unique colors, arranged by plugging the tips into a 1x1 grid, which evolve from black on the edges to white near the center of the piece.

THE MOSAIC IN GOLF TEES

The existing warehouse offered a unique aesthetic that defines the studio. Large glass block openings on the east wall filter natural light throughout the morning. Countering this is an art installation completed by the design team. 44,000 golf tees line the surface which depicts an aerial graphic of the local neighborhood. The intention was to create a single element that could offer the opportunities for the users to work in close proximity with one another in multiple configurations.

AN INSTALLATION IN PENCILS BY 'SPAGNOLA & ASSOCIATES'

→ Tony Spagnola - The Principal of Spagnola & Associates .

In 2011 Spagnola & Associates ( New York , U.S.A. ) faced the challenge of designing their new office space. They created a 20' wide dimensional wall to stimulate ideas and complete the office. 2804 pencils were hammered into pre-drilled holes in the panels. The completed wall reads, in custom designed letters, ‘good design lasts’. The entire process is documented in a stop motion video.

PASCALE MARTHINE TAYOU'S PENCILS

Pascale Marthine Tayou . Born in Yaoundé in 1967.Lives and works in Ghent, Belgium and in Yaoundé, Cameroon.

SOURCES –
ABOUT THE ARTIST -
The drawings, installations, sculptures, videos and performances by the Cameroonian artist Pascale Marthine Tayou question the structure of cultural and national identities, the significance of borders in an era of extreme globalisation, and the interaction between personal and collective histories. When the Red Door opened at the S.M.A.K. in 1996, its visitors entered through an installation by Tayou, an incredible pile of plastic bottles, cardboard boxes, fishing nets, bricks, tin cans, snippets of paper and all kinds of junk. Thus, with considerable irony, Tayou brought the chaotic life of Africa’s slums into the museum.
On 16 August 2009 the Jamaican Usain Bolt took the world record for the 10-metre sprint to an unreal 9.58 seconds. In 2012 Pascale Marthine Tayou has laid out a single-lane athletics track in the heart of the Tondelier district. Until the 1960s, this part of Ghent had been full of working industries. Although most of the factories have since been demolished or put to new use, one can even now still read the history of this neighbourhood in its eroded urban skin. Pascale Marthine Tayou’s Le défi is a red gravel track that comes to a dead end at a wall. It is clear how the work is to be read and used, but the consequences are ambiguous. Le défi will not be recognised as an artwork by most of the local residents. It is a playful but meditative reflection on the significance of sport, the acceptance of a challenge and the generation of social change and emancipation. In this way, Pascale Marthine Tayou has created ‘an image’ of both the global, Olympic heroism of a world record and the minor hitches facing every individual.

PASCALE MARTHINE TAYOU’S PENCILS AT ‘REVERSE CITY’ (AN ART SHOW IN JAPAN)

Rows of giant pencils hanging from thick beams appear in Matsudai Joyama. On each pencil is written the name of one of the countries of the world. The giant pencils are variously colored; some are short, some are tall. This town of pencils is fixed into a stainless steel frame and hovers, detached from Nature, at a height of about two meters. Suspended upside-down, the points of this colorful city are aimed at human visitors who, looking up at it, feel both awed and threatened.

She has also been teaching art since 1996 for example in Art School MAA (1996-2000).

THE ARTIST’S STATEMENT -

"I travelled to work in Pedvale with empty hands. I admired the lovely rural scene and the sunsets of Pedvale. I used local aspen in my work because of its lively forms and beautiful, grey colour. While you sharpen your pencils you can see time passing by. Colours bring joy and happiness in our everyday life. I chose a place of of my work because of the sunsets. You can sit and meditate near my work and look at the sunsets. Without sun there are no colours and life!"

JONNA POHJALAINEN’S COLOUR PENCILS ( 2006 )

The life size pencil set was shown as part of an outdoor exhibition at Open Air Art Museum in Latvia. Pohjalainen created the pieces during the Environmental Art workshop on the museum’s grounds. She arrived there supply-less and with an open mind. Everyday she would sit quietly taking in the rural landscape, sharpening her pencils and watching the sun set. Really, what else could she do but turn these grey aspen logs into an enormous, beautiful, art-supply-rush-inducing sculpture, titled Colour Pencils.

The aspens were chosen for their beautiful grey bark color, which the artist felt resembled the outer casings of common art supplies. The ends of each were painted with a bold rainbow color that could be found in a colored pencil box. By installing this series outdoors rather than in a gallery, Pohjalainen wants visitors to observe the interplay between the sculptures and the elements.  Placed in a rough hewn circle, the pencils jut out of the ground in varying heights and angles. One could imagine the bunch being thrown to the ground by a giant child passing through the landscape.

'THE COLOR PENCIL TREE' BY DAVE RITTINGER

DAVE RITTINGER , BROOKLYN ( NEW YORK , U.S.A. )

Dave Rittinger is a Brooklyn based Artist and Designer whose work is often playful, contextual, and opportunistic. Embodying a sense of humor and dueling spirit of critique and optimism he makes work that relates to our contemporary place in time through the embrace of wry subject matter and eccentric selection of materials.

His work has been shown throughout the New York area and has been featured in nymag, surface magazine, sick of the radio, design boom, art info, fashionista and beautiful decay  .

THE COLOR PENCIL TREE

Dave Rittinger had developed a proposal for a public art installation in North Philadelphia entitled 'Color Pencil Tree'. The arboreal sculpture morphs tree branches with the body of the colored drawing tools. The concept is dictated by the usage of existing trees to be re-purposed into a work of art for a City Park, in which many trees were slated for removal for a reserve redesign. Rittinger experimented with manipulating the limbs into different wooden objects of a similar shape like a baseball bat or toothpick but the vibrant shades of the pencils were the successful conclusion.

Rittinger says of the piece -

" My work is often playful, colorful and incorporates a sort of metaphorical blending of objects and function, so the fact that pencils are made of trees just made perfect sense. I really liked the idea of morphing the raw material into an embodiment of a manufactured product at this exaggerated scale."
