ABOUT HART -
George William Hart (born 1955) is a geometer who expresses himself both artistically and academically. He is also a research professor in the department of computer science at the State University of New York in Stony Brook, New York. His artistic work includes sculpture, computer images, toys (e.g. Zome) and puzzles. His sculptures have been featured in articles in the New York Times, Science (magazine), Tiede (Finnish), Ars et Mathesis (Dutch), Наука и жизнь (Russian) and other publications around the world. His academic work includes the online publication Encyclopedia of Polyhedra, the text book Multidimensional Analysis, and the instruction book Zome Geometry. He has also published over sixty academic articles. Hart is a co-founder of North America's only Museum of Mathematics, MoMath, in New York City. As chief of content, he set the "Math is Cool!" tone of the museum and spent five years designing original exhibits and workshop activities for it. Hart is a coinventor on two US patents, U.S. Patent 4,672,555 Digital ac monitor and U.S. Patent 4,858,141 Non-intrusive appliance monitor apparatus. These patents cover, in part, an improved electrical meter for homes called Nonintrusive load monitors. These meters track changes in voltage and current usage by a given household and then deduce which appliances are using how much electricity and when. Hart received a B.S. in Mathematics from MIT (1977), an M.A. in Linguistics from Indiana University (1979), and a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from MIT (1987).
ARTIST'S STATEMENT ( http://georgehart.com/ ) -
As a sculptor of constructive geometric forms, my work deals with patterns and relationships derived from classical ideals of balance and symmetry. Mathematical yet organic, these abstract forms invite the viewer to partake of the geometric aesthetic. I use a variety of media, including paper, wood, plastic, metal, and assemblages of common household objects.
Classical forms are pushed in new directions, so viewers can take pleasure in their Platonic beauty yet recognize how they are updated for our complex high-tech times. I share with many artists the idea that a pure form is a worthy object, and select for each piece the materials that best carry that form. In one series of pieces, familiar objects are arranged in engaging configurations, displaying an essential tension between mundane individual components and the strikingly original totality.
Because my works invite contemplation, slowly revealing their content, some viewers see them as meditation objects. A lively dancing energy moves within each piece and flows out to the viewer. The integral wholeness of each self-contained sculpture presents a crystalline purity, a conundrum of complexity, and a stark simplicity.

Hart says -
The one shown above is made with CMYK pencils. This idea is due to Jeff Rutzky, an NYC designer who often works with printers in the CMYK color space. He commissioned this special instance of the sculpture with those four colors. Although I had originally planned an edition of 25, and this was going to be #19/25, I liked Jeff's concept so much that I decided to end the edition early. So it is numbered 25/25.There is and will be no #19-24.

The above instance was commissioned by John Sullivan, with specially printed ISAMA pencils. The view shows how it looks along a three-fold axis of symmetry. For some viewers, part of the interest lies in the form of the interior. The four hexagonal tubes are hollow, so the sculpture as a whole is hollow. But, what shape is its cavity? What would someone on the inside see? To the mathematician, the answer is "the rhombic dodecahedron," a geometric solid bounded by twelve rhombuses.

72 Pencils is a geometric construction of 72 pencils, assembled into a work of art. Restricted to a signed limited edition of twenty-five, each shares a common form, yet each is unique. The form is an arrangement of four intersecting hexagonal tubes that penetrate each other in a fascinating three-dimensional lattice. Each of the sculptures in the edition is constructed with a different type of pencil, so each is a one-of-a-kind object.
