Carving in the wood of a pencil -
By Lawrence Milton ,  Sep 2, 2010.

Pencil carving is the favourite hobby of this youth, who is aiming to enter the Guinness book of records.
Meet S Nanjunda Swamy, who has mastered the art of breathing life into pencil by carving it into different shapes. His dexterity shows in his work when his pencil takes traditional and abstract forms like a human body, a deity or a heritage structure, much to the amusement of art admirers. The artist, in his early thirties, says he learnt the work himself and has not received any formal training in it.
The artist has created a miniature of Krishna Raja Circle with 7,300 leads, which is his one of his masterpieces. Also he has brought Mysore and Dasara celebrations live by carving dasara elephants and depicting Jayachamaraja Wodeyar, Mahishasura, K R Circle, Clock tower (Doddagadiyara) and Mysore Palace, all on one pencil, which is most striking among his works. Depiction of Ganesha along with the Snake God with 52 hoods is also one of the best.
Swamy says he took to pencil carving four years ago, after he saw a face-like figure on a lead while sharpening a pencil. This motivated him and he started carving leads during free time. Till then painting was his hobby.
The artist, who is running a mobile service shop, says pencil carving and painting help him unwind after the day's work. What is peculiar about Swamy is he works only after midnight as he feels it is the pleasant time. Another uniqueness in Swamy is he works without keeping the subject model in front of him for reference. Over the years, Swamy has honed the skills without any teacher. He claims there are very few pencil carving artists in India and he is one among them.

Swamy has taken less than a month to complete the work on K R Circle. He uses surgical blade and pin for carving the lead into attractive forms and for works which are minuscule, he uses magnifying glass. Over the years, Swamy has developed the art of working fast and is now aiming to enter the Guinness book of records. Let us wish, his dream come true.
